What food-safe insert materials are used for chocolate packaging?

Food safety in chocolate packaging refers to materials that are in indirect contact with confectionery — the insert tray that holds each chocolate, not the box itself. Chocolate is enclosed in a paper or foil wrapper and does not directly contact the insert tray, but international retailers and brands with BRCGS food packaging certification require that all materials in the box meet food-safe grading.

Moulded pulp trays — formed from recycled or virgin paper fibre — are the standard food-safe insert for chocolate gift boxes. The moulded pulp is formed into cavities that hold each chocolate piece individually and is produced without adhesive or synthetic binder. Moulded pulp is FSC-certifiable, biodegradable, and meets BRCGS packaging safety requirements when produced from food-grade fibre.
