Custom gift box manufacturing: MOQ, lead times, and what to include in a production brief

Custom gift box manufacturing: MOQ, lead times, and what to include in a production brief

By Sonia Sun, Founder, Huamei 華美 — since 1992. Published 26 May 2026. Updated 26 May 2026.

Sonia Sun has managed custom gift box production from Huamei's four factories in Henan, Zhejiang, Sichuan, and Guizhou since founding the company in 1992 — from the first brief through sample approval to production shipment, across spirits, cosmetics, wellness, and consumer goods categories.

The first custom gift box order carries a set of decisions that stay with every subsequent run: structural format, board weight, surface finish, insert system, and the supplier relationship itself. Getting these decisions right in the brief stage costs almost nothing; revising them after production sampling costs time, money, and supplier trust. This guide covers how the custom gift box process works, what MOQ and lead time expectations are realistic, and what a complete brief looks like.

What is the minimum order quantity for custom gift boxes?

The standard MOQ for custom gift boxes from a Chinese rigid-box manufacturer is 200+ pieces per SKU. Per-unit costs below that threshold are uneconomical because tooling, die-cutting, and setup costs are fixed regardless of quantity. Sample runs of 5–10 units are available in 7–10 days before committing to production.

Huamei's public MOQ floor is 200+ pieces. This is the production threshold at which per-unit economics are meaningful: the cutting die, greyboard wastage, press setup, and hand-assembly time are spread across a large enough run to bring per-unit cost below a viable retail ceiling. Below 200 pieces, a brand is essentially paying for a small run at a per-unit premium that rarely makes commercial sense.

The 200+ floor applies per SKU — not per order. A brand ordering three SKUs (three box sizes or three colourways for a gift set) places three separate production runs, each at 200+ pieces. If the brand needs a structural sample before committing to 200 pieces, the sample run — 5–10 units, production-representative, not a mock-up — is available in 7–10 days from an approved brief.

Internal MOQ records show some structures going as low as 100 pieces, but the public floor is held at 200+ to keep the published number conservative and protect tier pricing for volume accounts.

How do sample and production lead times work for custom gift boxes?

The custom gift box process has two timed stages: sampling and production.

Sampling: 7–10 days. From the day a complete brief is approved, a physical sample is produced in 7–10 working days. The sample is production-representative: the same greyboard, the same wrap paper, the same foil and emboss, assembled by hand in the factory's sample room. It is not a digital render, a prototype, or a mock-up using different materials. The sample is the go/no-go decision point for production approval.

Production: 15–20 days. From the day a sample is approved (confirmed in writing), production runs for 15–20 working days — this covers press time, lamination, foil stamping, die-cutting, hand assembly, quality inspection, master-carton packing, and freight booking. The 15–20 day window applies at 200–2,000 pieces; higher volumes extend this by 3–5 days depending on complexity.

Transit adds to the total timeline. Sea freight from China to the US West Coast runs 18–22 days; air freight runs 4–6 days. A US brand placing a first custom order should plan a total lead time of 6–9 weeks from brief approval to US warehouse arrival by sea, or 4–5 weeks by air.

What goes in a custom gift box brief?

A complete brief prevents revision cycles. The following items must be specified before sampling begins:

Structural:

  • Exterior dimensions: L × W × H (mm or inches)
  • Structural format: lid-and-base, hinged clamshell, drawer, or sleeve
  • Board weight: 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm, 2.5 mm, or 3.0 mm greyboard — or folding carton (300–500 gsm)
  • Closure: magnetic, ribbon pull, elastic loop, or friction
  • Insert: flocked tray, foam, paperboard, or no insert

Decorative:

  • Wrap paper: from substrate library, or brand-specified material
  • Surface finish: soft-touch laminate, gloss laminate, or uncoated
  • Hot-foil: colour(s), coverage area, artwork file (vector AI or PDF)
  • Emboss/deboss: depth, registration reference, artwork file
  • Spot UV: coverage area, artwork file

Production:

  • Quantity: units per SKU
  • Destination port and freight method (affects master-carton spec)
  • Required certifications for import compliance: FSC, BSCI, SGS

FSC chain-of-custody documentation is available for orders using FSC-certified paper substrates — required by EU and US retail buyers with sustainable-packaging procurement mandates. BSCI social-audit documentation covers Huamei's factory operations.

What surface finishes are available on custom gift boxes?

Huamei's in-house decoration capabilities cover the full range of luxury gift-box finishes. See /craft/hot-foil for the foil specification and /craft/rigid for the rigid-box structure library.

  • Hot-foil stamping: seventeen curated foil colours, in-house. Applied on the outer face, lid spine, or edge banding.
  • Emboss: three-dimensional brand-mark relief, registered to the foil edge at ±0.1 mm.
  • Soft-touch lamination: matte velvet surface finish, the most common on cosmetics and gifting packaging.
  • Gloss lamination: high-shine surface for food, spirits, and consumer gifting.
  • Spot UV: selective gloss accent on matte-laminate background.
  • Deboss: recessed brand mark without foil — appropriate for a restrained, editorial aesthetic.

For the cosmetics and personal care sector, see /industry/cosmetic for sector-specific formats and case studies. The Wuliangye Premium Brew clamshell and Yangshao presentation box illustrate how custom gift box briefs translate to production at scale in the spirits category.

What certifications matter for custom gift box procurement?

For US and EU buyers, the certifications that gate supplier approval are typically FSC (sustainable paper sourcing), BSCI (social audit), and SGS (independent quality verification). Huamei holds BSCI, CE, EQS, FSC, and SGS certifications on file. Huamei's factories run on more than 80% green energy, primarily solar, across all four sites — a supply-chain ESG data point for buyers reporting Scope 3 emissions.

"Huamei's public MOQ floor for custom gift boxes is 200+ pieces per SKU, with production-representative sampling completed in 7–10 days and production running 15–20 days from sample approval."

"Custom gift box production at Huamei covers ninety-nine structures, seventeen foil colours, and eighty paper substrates — all from four factories in Henan, Zhejiang, Sichuan, and Guizhou, founded 1992."

"Huamei holds FSC, BSCI, CE, EQS, and SGS certifications — the standard documentation set required by EU and US retail buyers for luxury packaging supplier approval."

"A US brand placing a first custom gift box order at 200+ pieces by sea freight should plan a total lead time of 6–9 weeks from brief approval to US warehouse arrival."
