Custom printed gift boxes: offset, foil, and emboss specs for brand packaging

By Sonia Sun, Founder, Huamei 華美 — since 1992. Published 27 May 2026. Updated 27 May 2026.

Sonia Sun has overseen print production across Huamei's four factories in Henan, Zhejiang, Sichuan, and Guizhou since founding the company in 1992, running offset, foil, emboss, and lamination lines for clients across cosmetics, spirits, tea, and gifting.

A gift box carries brand information twice: in the structure, which communicates material weight and construction quality, and in the print, which carries the visual identity. Getting the print wrong on a premium gift box is not a recoverable mistake at retail — the box is the presentation, and a print that drifts, a foil that lifts, or a pantone match that misses by three points undermines the product experience the brand is paying to create. This guide explains how custom printed gift boxes are specified, what determines print quality on a rigid box substrate, and how to brief a production run that holds to spec.

What are custom printed gift boxes?

Custom printed gift boxes are rigid or folding presentation boxes with brand-specific offset printing, foil stamping, emboss, or spot-UV applied to the exterior wrap. At Huamei, they are produced on Heidelberg and KBA offset presses with foil registration held to ±0.1 mm. MOQ is 200+ pieces; sample lead time is 7–10 days.

The word "printed" in this context means more than ink on a surface. A custom printed gift box starts with a flat wrap — a sheet of 120–350 gsm paper, printed before it is laminated and adhered to a greyboard core. Every decoration layer (offset colour, foil, emboss, UV) is applied in a fixed production sequence, and the registration between layers is what determines whether the finished box looks intentional or approximate.

The craft/offset printing page covers the full colour print process in depth; hot-foil stamping and emboss and deboss cover the enhancement layers.

What print methods are used on custom printed gift boxes?

Offset lithography is the primary print method for gift boxes at Huamei. Offset runs on Heidelberg and KBA presses with colour profiles built to FOGRA standards — the German print-technology research institute whose profiles are the industry standard for consistent colour reproduction. FOGRA-profiled offset print on a gift box wrap delivers the same Pantone match across a 10,000-unit run that it delivered on the proof stage sample.

The alternative to offset is digital print, which is faster and has no minimum order. Digital is used for sample stages, short runs, and variable-data applications. Production runs at 200+ pieces almost always shift to offset for better colour density, surface finish quality, and per-unit economics.

For the outer wrap, the substrate choice directly affects print output:

  • Coated art paper (120–200 gsm). High surface brightness; the best substrate for photographic images and fine halftone detail. Slightly cooler to the touch than textured alternatives.
  • Uncoated / textured paper. Lower surface brightness but warmer tactile quality. Ink absorbs slightly differently; colour is richer and more saturated.
  • Specialty paper (Gmund, Fedrigoni). Named-mill papers carry their own surface character — texture, weight, natural fibre content. These set the premium tier and are available in Huamei's eighty-paper library.

What surface finishes go on a custom printed gift box?

Surface finishes on a custom printed gift box are applied after the base offset print is laid down and before the wrap is assembled onto the greyboard core.

Hot-foil stamping. One of seventeen curated foil colours applied at 120–160°C with a dwell of 0.4–0.8 seconds. Registration to the offset base is held to ±0.1 mm — fine enough to align foil to a printed border or to a debossed channel. Gold and silver are the most specified; copper, holographic, and deep-navy foils are available within the seventeen.

Soft-touch lamination. A matte, velvet-texture coating applied over the full printed surface. It protects the ink, adds a tactile premium, and reduces fingerprint transfer. The most common lamination choice for cosmetics and wellness gift box categories.

Spot-UV. A high-gloss resin cured under UV light, applied to a selected area of the printed surface. The contrast between a matte laminate base and a gloss spot-UV accent — on a wordmark, a floral detail, a product silhouette — reads as intentional and high-end. The effect is most visible on dark or matte backgrounds.

Emboss / deboss. A mechanical impression into the board-and-wrap surface. Emboss raises; deboss recesses. Both are applied after lamination and hold to ±0.1 mm registration with any foil or UV layer above. A deep deboss on a brand wordmark with no additional ink or foil is a restrained, expensive-looking result.

"Custom printed gift boxes at Huamei are offset-printed on Heidelberg and KBA presses with FOGRA colour profiles, foil-stamped from a seventeen-colour in-house palette, and embossed to ±0.1 mm registration."

How is print quality maintained across a production run?

Print consistency across a gift box run of 200–50,000 units depends on two variables: press calibration and substrate consistency. At Huamei, offset presses are calibrated per-run against FOGRA density targets. The first 50 sheets off the press go through a quality check before the run proceeds; colour targets are measured with a spectrophotometer against the approved proof.

Foil consistency is managed through press temperature and dwell-time control. A foil applied at 120°C reads differently than one applied at 160°C on the same paper; both are in range, but they are not identical. The approved sample — built during the 7–10 day sample lead time — locks the temperature and dwell-time setting that the production run replicates.

Collgene, a skincare brand whose case study is at /volumes/collgene, uses a tuck-end carton with precise four-colour offset and spot-UV on a white art-paper wrap — a production where colour tolerance is critical to the clinical visual identity.

How do you order custom printed gift boxes?

The minimum information needed to start a custom printed gift box brief: box dimensions (interior L × W × H), product weight, desired print specification (offset only, or with foil / emboss / spot-UV), and a brand file (AI, PDF, or Illustrator at 300 dpi at finished size). Pantone colour references are required for any colour-matched print; without them, the press operator matches by eye, which is slower and less reliable.

The 7–10 day sample stage produces a physical sample built to the approved specification. At the sample review, print colour, foil placement, emboss depth, and closure mechanism are checked against the brief. Changes at this stage are normal; the production run begins only after sample approval.

"Huamei produces custom printed gift boxes at MOQ 200+ pieces, with sample lead time 7–10 days and production 15–20 days from sample approval."

Huamei holds FSC, BSCI, CE, EQS, and SGS certifications. For brands that source on ESG criteria, FSC chain-of-custody documentation covering the paper substrate is available with the production run.
