Custom printed tissue paper for luxury packaging: specs, MOQ, and unboxing impact

Sonia Sun has directed Huamei's packaging programmes for cosmetic, gifting, and spirits brands across four factories in Henan, Zhejiang, Sichuan, and Guizhou since founding the company in Zhengzhou in 1992 — including the tissue paper specifications that govern how a product is wrapped before the outer box closes.
Tissue paper is the most tactile element of the luxury unboxing experience. It is also among the most under-specified. Brands that invest in a rigid box with hot foil and emboss, then wrap the product in generic white tissue, leave the interior of the unboxing moment undesigned. Custom printed tissue — branded with a logo, a pattern, or a single colour — extends the craft to the final layer. This guide sets out the specification decisions: paper weight, print method, colour, FSC certification, and MOQ.
What paper weight is used for custom printed tissue paper in luxury packaging?
Custom printed tissue paper for luxury gift packaging typically runs between 17 gsm and 28 gsm. Seventeen gsm is the standard for a lightweight, translucent wrap with a traditional tissue handle; 25–28 gsm gives more body and accepts screen or offset printing with less ink bleed. Heavier tissue (above 28 gsm) is used for structured wraps or where the tissue doubles as a product liner.
Weight drives two properties simultaneously: handle and printability. Lightweight tissue (17–20 gsm) crinkles and layers naturally — the familiar luxury unwrap motion. It is semi-translucent, which creates depth when layered. Print on lightweight tissue requires careful ink management because the sheet has less fibre density to hold ink, and bleed can make fine logos read soft.
Mid-weight tissue (22–28 gsm) feels more substantial, holds printed detail more reliably, and does not crinkle as readily. It is the better choice for full-coverage pattern printing — repeating brand marks, geometric prints, or illustrated designs where print sharpness across the full sheet matters. It also handles better when used as a structured insert liner inside a rigid box tray.
"Tissue paper at 17 gsm prioritises drape and translucency; tissue at 25–28 gsm prioritises print fidelity. The choice between them determines both how the wrapping feels during unboxing and how precisely a brand logo or repeating pattern reproduces."
What print methods are used for custom tissue paper?
Two print methods dominate for custom tissue at packaging volumes.
Flexographic printing is the standard for tissue paper production runs above 5,000 sheets. Flexo uses a flexible rubber or polymer plate inked and pressed onto the tissue at speed. Colour registration on flexo tissue is adequate for solid colour blocks and simple logos, but it is not the choice for photographic gradients or tight multi-colour registration. The cost per sheet drops sharply at volume. Flexo is the right method for branded tissue with a single-colour or two-colour logo where per-unit cost matters.
Screen printing is used for shorter runs and for designs requiring opaque colour on coloured tissue stock. Screen printing applies a thicker ink deposit, which matters when printing a white or metallic logo on a dark tissue ground. Registration on screen printing is tighter than flexo for small runs. It is the method used when a dark-ground tissue with a high-opacity brand mark is the design direction.
Offset printing on tissue is possible for very flat, smooth tissue grades with sufficient body (typically 25+ gsm) and is the method that delivers the highest colour fidelity against Pantone reference. Huamei's Heidelberg and KBA offset presses can be set up for tissue printing on appropriate stock. Offset is specified when brand colour standards require tight Pantone tolerance on the tissue surface.
"Flexographic printing is the cost-efficient standard for tissue at volume; screen printing delivers opaque coverage on coloured ground tissue; offset achieves the tightest Pantone tolerance for brands with strict colour standards."
Does custom tissue paper require FSC certification?
For European cosmetic and retail buyers requiring a fully FSC chain-of-custody programme, tissue paper is within scope. The FSC chain-of-custody standard covers paper at every weight, including tissue grades. A factory supplying custom printed tissue on FSC-certified stock must hold FSC CoC certification and source tissue from FSC-certified mills.
Huamei's FSC certification covers paper-based packaging production, including tissue paper inserts supplied as part of a complete packaging programme. For brands specifying FSC-certified tissue, the factory can confirm the stock is covered under its FSC certificate. The brand's own FSC trademark licence is required to print the FSC logo on the tissue itself — the factory certificate alone is not sufficient for on-tissue labelling.
For brands whose procurement policy requires FSC-certified material but does not require on-tissue labelling — common in US corporate gifting programmes — Huamei's factory certificate is sufficient. The brand can reference its supplier's FSC status in sustainability reporting without the trademark licence step. Full certification documentation is at /house/certifications.
What does custom tissue paper add to the unboxing experience?
The interior of a rigid box communicates quality through three layers: the interior lining of the box walls, the insert or tray, and the wrap around the product. Custom tissue occupies the third layer — the first material the buyer physically touches when opening the box.
Branded tissue with a single-colour mark on white stock is the minimum investment. It signals intentionality — that the interior was designed, not just filled. A repeating pattern in brand colours extends the brand surface further. Dark tissue (black, navy, deep burgundy) with a white or metallic logo creates a contrasting interior that functions as a reveal moment before the product is visible.
The most effective tissue applications are contextual to the product. For a skincare set — as in Collgene's packaging, produced at Huamei — tissue wrapping a glass ampoule set adds protection and tactile warmth simultaneously. For a spirits gift set, tissue around a bottle in a structured tray carries the brand mark at the moment the box opens and the consumer sees the bottle for the first time.
"Custom printed tissue paper extends the brand surface to the first layer a consumer physically touches during unboxing. At 17–28 gsm with a single-colour or pattern print, it is the lowest-cost per-unit investment that converts an undesigned interior into a complete luxury experience."
What is the MOQ for custom printed tissue paper?
Huamei's programmes include tissue paper as part of the complete packaging brief — the tissue specification is set at the same stage as the outer box structure and decoration. For tissue supplied as part of a full packaging programme, the MOQ aligns with the box MOQ: 200+ pieces.
Tissue-only runs — without an accompanying rigid box order — require a minimum of 500 sheets for screen printing and 2,000 sheets for flexographic printing due to plate and setup costs. Lead times for tissue within a programme follow the production schedule: sample tissue is returned within the 7–10 day sample window; production tissue ships with the box order at the 15–20 day production lead time.
To specify custom printed tissue as part of a packaging programme, include the tissue brief alongside the outer box specification at /begin. Confirm paper weight, print method, colour (Pantone reference), and FSC requirement at that stage.
