Dragon Boat Festival gift packaging: rigid box structures for Duanwu zongzi and spirits gifting

By Sonia Sun, Founder, Huamei 華美 — since 1992. Published 23 May 2026. Updated 23 May 2026.

Sonia Sun has produced Dragon Boat Festival gift packaging at Huamei since founding the company in Zhengzhou in 1992 — across zongzi gift sets, baijiu gifting formats, and festival tea packaging for brands across Henan, Zhejiang, Sichuan, and Guizhou.

Dragon Boat Festival (端午节, Duanwu Jie) falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month — 11 June in 2026. UNESCO-inscribed as intangible cultural heritage, it sits alongside Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn as one of the three major gift-giving occasions in the Chinese calendar. The gift packaging requirement is specific: zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings), baijiu, and premium tea dominate the category, and each has a different structural brief. This guide covers the most common rigid box formats, the festival's visual register, and the production calendar for orders placed now.

When should I order packaging for Dragon Boat Festival?

Dragon Boat Festival falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month — 11 June in 2026. To receive finished packaging in time, production must start by mid-May. That means artwork locked four to six weeks before the festival date, with a 7–10 day sample cycle running before that.

With a 15–20 day production cycle at Huamei and three to seven days for domestic China logistics, the last safe production start for Duanwu 2026 (11 June) was mid-May — which is now past. Brands planning for Duanwu 2027 should lock artwork by mid-April 2027 and start production by early May. The 7–10 day sample cycle should run in March 2027 to allow two rounds of sample approval before production begins. Orders that miss the April lock date will need to accept expedited formats with reduced structure and finish options.

Brands that have not yet ordered for 2026 can still commission a Duanwu-themed box for post-festival corporate gifting or a late-June delivery window, where the festival association remains appropriate through to the end of June. MOQ is 200+ pieces; compressed timelines are possible with artwork submitted in final form.

What rigid box formats are used for Dragon Boat Festival gift packaging?

Dragon Boat Festival gift packaging follows three primary formats, each matched to a product type.

Zongzi gift sets. Zongzi are roughly cylindrical, 80–120 mm tall and 40–60 mm in diameter. A set of six or twelve zongzi in a rigid box requires die-cut foam or moulded paper pulp inserts with individual cavities. The standard format is a lift-off lid two-piece rigid box with internal greyboard partitions. Box footprint for a twelve-zongzi set runs approximately 300 × 240 × 80 mm, with 2.0 mm greyboard walls. At Huamei, insert fit is confirmed against actual zongzi samples during the 7–10 day sampling cycle — production is not released from drawings alone, because artisanal zongzi vary in diameter and height.

Baijiu and spirits gifting. The same bottle-presentation formats used for spirits gifting apply to Duanwu. Single-bottle magnetic-closure upright boxes and two-bottle clamshells are both common. The Yangshao Caitao bottle-silhouette deboss treatment demonstrates the festival spirits approach: a deep deboss of the bottle form on the outer face, with gold foil registered to the recessed surface at ±0.1 mm.

Premium tea gifting. Loose-leaf tea in a rigid lift-off lid or sleeve-and-tray box is a growing Duanwu corporate gift format. The rigid box serves as the outer gift layer holding a lacquerware caddy or a decorated tin as the primary vessel. For brands shipping tea gift sets through China domestic logistics, the 24-hour transit vibration test and drop test that Huamei applies to all export packaging confirms the structure survives courier handling.

What is the visual register for Dragon Boat Festival packaging?

Dragon Boat Festival packaging reads in green, gold, red, and deep teal — the palette of dragon boat imagery, medicinal herbs, and traditional woven textiles.

Green (jade green, forest green, and deep olive) is the primary colour for zongzi packaging: the association with the bamboo leaves used to wrap zongzi anchors the palette. Gold foil is the standard accent. Hot-foil stamping in warm gold on a green coated art or soft-touch laminate base is the most common surface treatment. Huamei holds seventeen curated in-house foil colours, including warm gold, antique gold, and a bronzed gold appropriate for festival gifting at this price register.

Dragon and boat motifs are typically rendered as deboss relief on the box outer face, with a gold foil callout registered to the crest of the deboss. Registration is held to ±0.1 mm at Huamei, which allows fine-line dragon scale and wave pattern work that aligns precisely with the deboss relief below it.

How does a Duanwu gift brief differ from a standard rigid box brief?

A Duanwu gift brief has three elements not always present in a standard rigid box brief.

Insert specification for irregular products. Zongzi are not dimensionally uniform — artisanal sizes vary within a brand's product range. The brief must include the maximum zongzi dimensions (diameter and height for each format) so insert cavities are cut to the actual product range, not a generic template. Huamei confirms insert fit against physical product samples before production release.

Outer carton specification. Festival gift sets are often shipped directly to corporate recipients without a secondary outer. The rigid gift box must survive courier handling through the full ISTA-equivalent protocol: 24-hour transit vibration simulation, drop testing, and empty-box compression. Huamei tests all export-grade packaging to high 50 °C / low -30 °C environmental exposure, which also models summer domestic logistics conditions.

Certification requirements. For food-adjacent packaging (zongzi sets, tea), FSC-certified greyboard and wrap paper are required by most major retail buyers. FSC chain-of-custody is available at Huamei's standard MOQ of 200+ pieces. BSCI, CE, EQS, and SGS certifications are also on file for international buyers with supply-chain audit requirements.
