Sonia Sun has produced drawer box packaging at Huamei's Henan factory since founding the company in Zhengzhou in 1992 — including the Oriental Memoirs laser-cut gift set, a drawer format with a ribbon pull and a die-cut interior showcase used for premium gifting presentation.
The drawer box is the oldest luxury gift-box format in continuous production. It appears in tea chest design from the eighteenth century, in jewellery trade packaging from the mid-nineteenth, and today in premium gifting at MOQ 200 and above. Its longevity comes from a combination of structural qualities no other rigid box format fully replicates: the controlled reveal of a sliding tray, the structural rigidity of a nested sleeve, and the visible premium signal of a ribbon tab even before the box is opened.
What is a drawer box?
A drawer box is a rigid gift-box format in which a tray slides horizontally out of a fixed outer sleeve on a ribbon pull. The outer sleeve is typically 2.0 mm greyboard wrapped in printed paper; the inner tray sits 2–4 mm narrower on each side so it slides freely without rattling. Both sleeve and tray are hand-assembled with PVA adhesive.
The outer sleeve is a three-sided channel — open at one end — into which the inner tray sits. A ribbon, typically 6–12 mm wide, threads through a die-cut slot at the closed end of the tray so the recipient can pull the tray forward. The ribbon is the tactile cue that initiates the reveal: the resistance of the tray sliding against the sleeve creates a deliberate, unhurried opening moment that a flip-lid cannot reproduce.
Huamei carries ninety-nine structures on file, of which the drawer box appears in multiple variants: single-tray (one pull direction), double-tray (opens from either end), and two-tier (stacked trays for multi-SKU gift sets where each SKU occupies its own layer). The standard single-tray format is the most common at volumes below 2,000 pieces; the two-tier format appears more often in spirits and premium cosmetic sets at 500+ pieces.
What board weight and structure does a drawer box require?
A luxury drawer box uses 2.0–2.5 mm greyboard for the outer sleeve and 1.5–2.0 mm for the inner tray — two different weights serving two different structural jobs.
The outer sleeve carries the full structural load: it holds the interior tray under compression during stacking, protects the print surface against rub and impact in transit, and presents the exterior decoration. The greyboard is wrapped in a 105–157 gsm coated or uncoated paper — depending on the surface-finish brief — and bonded with a food-safe PVA adhesive. At 2.0 mm, the sleeve wall is rigid enough to stack ten boxes without deformation under transit-grade compression testing. Huamei tests empty boxes at simulated stacking loads before production sign-off.
The inner tray runs lighter at 1.5–2.0 mm because its structural job is narrower: to carry the product weight and to slide cleanly against the sleeve interior without deformation. The tray is lined with a secondary paper — usually uncoated or fabric-covered — chosen to complement the outer sleeve's register.
At the ribbon slot, the die is cut with a rounded-corner punch to prevent the slot from tearing under repeated use. The ribbon is stitched or heat-sealed at the tray interior so the pull attachment does not fail before the box reaches its destination.
What surface finishes work on a drawer box?
The outer sleeve of a drawer box supports the full range of rigid box surface finishes: four-colour offset print, hot-foil stamping in any of Huamei's seventeen curated foil colours, emboss, deboss, spot-UV, and both soft-touch and matte lamination.
The sleeve surface is the primary brand-communication canvas. Hot-foil to emboss registration on the sleeve is held to ±0.1 mm — tighter than the ±0.3 mm industry standard — so a brand mark that uses both foil and emboss reads as a single precise element rather than two overlapping ones.
The inner tray edge is visible when the drawer is partially open — typically the first interior surface the recipient sees. A contrasting liner colour or a secondary brand-colour fabric facing on the tray edge is a low-cost detail that reinforces the unboxing signal. The transition from the outer sleeve's print-and-foil to a quiet interior liner tells the hand that the product inside is held with care.
When should a brand choose a drawer box over a magnetic-flap lid?
A drawer box outperforms a magnetic-flap lid when the product brief requires simultaneous reveal of multiple items, or when the brand register favours a horizontal opening motion over a vertical lift.
A magnetic-flap lid opens upward and reveals the product from above. The ribbon-pull drawer opens horizontally and reveals the product from the front. For gift sets where the brand identity is strongest from the front face — a row of bottles, a row of skincare SKUs, a cosmetic palette — the horizontal reveal frames the products as they would appear on a retail shelf, which is often a stronger first-impression moment than looking down into an open box.
For single-SKU products with a strong top-surface graphic, the magnetic-flap lid is typically the better choice. For multi-SKU sets or products where the product label is the primary brand communication, the drawer box positions the recipient at the right angle for the reveal.
The Oriental Memoirs drawer set uses a laser-cut window in the outer sleeve so the product inside is partially visible before the tray is pulled — a format that works on counter display as well as in a gifting context, because the window communicates product before the box is opened.
How does drawer box production scale from sample to full run?
Drawer box samples run on the same 7–10 day timeline as other rigid box formats, with one additional variable: the ribbon slot punch. The die for the ribbon slot is fabricated in 1–2 days and is part of the sample tooling. If the ribbon spec changes — width, material, colour — after sample approval, the slot die may require adjustment before production lock.
Production runs complete in 15–20 days from sample sign-off at MOQ 200+. Hand-assembly — aligning the ribbon slot, threading the ribbon, and sealing the attachment — is the rate-limiting step for complex configurations. The two-tier double-drawer format adds approximately 2–3 days to the standard production window at 200-piece volumes.
