Gin has become one of the most design-forward categories in spirits packaging. A craft gin brand launching into retail expects the box to signal the same quality as the liquid: precise colours, tactile finishes, and a structure that feels considered. This guide covers the structural options, finish choices, and export specification decisions that matter most when briefing a custom rigid box for a gin or craft spirits bottle.

What rigid box structure works best for gin bottle packaging?

A magnetic-closure rigid box or clamshell structure with a formed EVA or pulp insert is the standard for premium gin bottle packaging. The insert holds the bottle upright, protects the neck, and adds the tactile weight that signals quality before the cap is removed.

The three structures most commonly used for single-bottle spirits packaging:

Magnetic closure lid-and-base. The most versatile form for retail. The lid lifts cleanly, the bottle sits centred in a formed insert, and the exterior surface takes hot-foil and emboss at a register of ±0.1 mm. This structure works for standard 700 ml bottles and for the oversized formats (1 L, 1.75 L) that some gin brands use as flagship or travel-retail editions.

Clamshell. A hinged-spine structure that opens like a book, revealing the bottle across the full width of the interior. Better for double-bottle sets or for brands where the unboxing arc — the moment of reveal — is part of the brand language. Bespoke drum or cylinder. For brands where the shape is the statement. Cylinder structures are higher-cost because of the tooling for curved greyboard, but they are distinctive on shelf.

How surface finish choices change for spirits versus cosmetics packaging

Spirits packaging tolerates heavier metallic foil treatments than cosmetics, where the visual language tends toward matte and textural. A gin brand aiming for shelf stand-out in a retail environment can run hot-foil across a large proportion of the exterior surface — a full-front panel in gold, silver, or one of Huamei's seventeen curated foil colours — without the result looking excessive.

The practical constraint is not aesthetics but registration. A label-size foil die on a kraft-wrapped box is straightforward. A foil panel that wraps a corner, or that has to align to a debossed frame, requires the ±0.1 mm registration tolerance that Huamei holds on the Heidelberg and KBA press lines. Specify your foil-to-structure registration requirement explicitly on the brief — "foil-to-deboss ±0.1 mm" — rather than leaving it to the manufacturer to interpret.

Soft-touch lamination on spirits boxes creates a matte, slightly grippy feel on the exterior paper. It is popular for craft gin because it reads as artisanal rather than commercial. The operational note: soft-touch laminate reduces foil adhesion on some paper stocks. If you are combining soft-touch with a large foil area, the paper and laminate specification needs to be confirmed before tooling.

Insert specification for gin and craft spirits bottles

The insert serves two functions: transit protection and presentation. Failing at either is a brand problem.

For a standard 700 ml bottle, an EVA foam insert sized at 2–3 mm wall thickness around the bottle is the minimum transit specification. At Huamei, insert blanks are cut against the confirmed bottle dimensions — height, base diameter, and shoulder profile — not a generic bottle template. This is relevant for craft spirits brands where bottle shapes are often custom-blown and deviate from standard wine-bottle proportions.

Box inserts for double-bottle sets require a divider that prevents bottle-to-bottle contact during transit. The most reliable form is a moulded insert (EVA or pulp) that seats both bottles in individual cavities, with a shared base panel. A folded board divider is cheaper but provides less protection on the Huamei transit-vibration test (24-hour simulation at sustained vibration, stacking pressure, and repeated handling).

Export specification: what gin brands sourcing from China need to know

Sourcing from China means the box ships on ICC Incoterms — typically FOB Shanghai or FOB Ningbo — with the buyer's freight forwarder taking responsibility from the port. The lead time from confirmed artwork to ex-factory is 15–20 days for a standard production run. Samples come back in 7–10 days.

Huamei holds BSCI, CE, EQS, FSC, and SGS certifications. For gin brands selling into the EU or UK, FSC certification on the paper and board is the most frequently requested audit item; BSCI covers the social compliance audit that many supermarket and off-licence buyers require from their suppliers.
