The magnetic closure rigid box is one of the highest-specified formats in luxury gifting. The question international buyers ask — and should ask before confirming sea versus air freight — is whether that magnet strength triggers any freight declaration requirement.

Do magnetic closure luxury boxes require air freight declaration?

Magnetic material requires air freight declaration under IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) Packing Instruction 953 when the magnetic field strength at 2.1 metres from the package exceeds 0.418 A/m. Most luxury rigid box closures at 2,800 Gauss — including Huamei's full closure range — do not trigger this threshold when the box is properly closed and the magnets are fully enclosed in greyboard. Confirmation requires a magnetometer measurement of the finished packed unit, not a calculation from magnet strength alone.

The key variable is not the magnet's rated Gauss figure but the external field at a specified distance from the packaged unit. A magnet rated at 2,800 Gauss as a component produces a different external field than that same magnet enclosed in greyboard, wrapped in paper, packed in a polybag, and placed inside a master carton. The greyboard and paper layers attenuate the external field significantly; in practice, the standard luxury rigid box with embedded N35-grade neodymium magnets — the grade most commonly used in 6–35 g pull-force closures — falls below the IATA threshold in finished-pack configuration.

What drives the threshold: field strength versus magnet rating

Two concepts that are frequently confused in buyer conversations: Gauss, which is the unit of magnetic flux density internal to the magnet itself, and the external field at distance, which is what IATA regulates. A 2,800 Gauss magnet is a material specification, not a shipping classification.

The ICAO Technical Instructions define the test: the magnetometer is placed 2.1 m from the surface of the packaged unit. At that distance, the external field of a correctly enclosed magnetic closure box typically falls below the 0.418 A/m threshold — because the magnetic field of a flat-disc or bar magnet attenuates as the cube of the distance from the source. At 2.1 m from a package holding standard N35 magnets in greyboard construction, the field is reduced by several orders of magnitude from the surface field of the bare magnet component.

The exceptions — packages where the threshold is approached or exceeded — tend to involve industrial-grade magnets at N52 or stronger, magnetic assemblies without greyboard shielding, or unusually high concentrations of magnets in a single package (more than sixty magnetic closure boxes per master carton without interlayer padding). None of these conditions describe standard luxury rigid box programmes.

Sea freight versus air freight for magnetic closure programmes

Sea freight does not carry the IATA magnetized material classification. A magnetic closure rigid box programme shipped by sea from China to a US or European port does not require any magnet-specific declaration under IMO / IMDG regulations, provided the packages are correctly declared by product category (the finished goods, not a magnetic component).

Air freight is where the classification question matters. For time-sensitive luxury programmes — holiday launches that must arrive within a narrow window, replenishment orders for retail accounts — air freight is sometimes the default. For these shipments, the magnetometer confirmation should be in hand before booking freight. Most forwarders handling luxury goods routinely request confirmation for any magnetic closure programme; having the measurement in the export file avoids delays at origin or destination.

What to request at the brief stage for international magnetic closure programmes

A buyer placing an international magnetic closure order should request three things at the brief confirmation stage: the pull-force specification for the selected closure (in grams, at the selected Gauss rating), the N-grade of the magnet component (to confirm the category), and the magnetometer measurement for the proposed master-carton pack configuration.
