The question every brand director eventually asks on a magnetic-flap rigid box is the same: how strong should the magnet be? The answer is a range, not a number, and the range is six to fifty grams of pull-force at 2,800 Gauss. Below six and the closure feels loose; above fifty and it snaps too hard for a luxury unbox. This page explains why the range is what it is, what determines where in the range a project should sit, and how to spec it on a brief without prescribing the wrong number.
What pull-force is, and why it is the spec that matters
Magnetic closure pull-force on a luxury rigid box should sit between 6 and 50 grams at 2,800 Gauss, depending on the closure geometry and the wrapped board weight. Below 6 g the closure feels loose; above 50 g it snaps too hard for a luxury unbox.
Pull-force is the weight, in grams, that the magnet can hold against gravity before it releases. It is measured by hanging a known mass from one half of the closed magnetic pair and recording the value at which the pair separates. The Gauss number (2,800 across all our closure types) is a separate measurement of the magnet's surface field strength — it does not move with project. Pull-force is the variable; Gauss is the constant.
The reason pull-force is the spec that matters is that it is the only number on a magnetic box that a buyer can feel. They will not feel the board weight, the wrap gsm, the foil dwell time, or the registration tolerance. They will feel the closure. The closure decides whether the box reads as expensive or as cheap when it lands on the table.
Where in the range to sit
The 6–50 g range maps onto closure geometry and board weight. Two variables, in this order:
Closure geometry. A small flap covering one face of a slim cosmetic carton can run at the low end — 6 to 12 grams — because the geometry already wants to close. A clamshell hinge that has to overcome the angular momentum of the lid swinging open needs 25 to 50 grams to settle. A nested two-piece magnetic lift-off — the most common geometry for premium spirits and beauty — sits in the middle at 18 to 30 grams.
Wrapped board weight. Heavier board fights the magnet more. A 3.0 mm chipboard wrap takes more pull-force to keep closed than a 1.5 mm wrap, by roughly 30%. Our press operator measures this on the actual production sample, not from a calculated estimate.
A third variable shows up in roughly one project in eight: wrap material. A book-cloth wrap (Iris, Wibalin) compresses unevenly under the magnet pair and reduces effective pull-force by about 10–15% versus a paper wrap of equivalent gsm. We add to the magnet count to compensate.
How we tune it
Three knobs, in order of preference:
- Magnet count per closure. The cleanest variable. Adding a second magnet pair on a wider lid roughly doubles pull-force without changing the field strength of any individual magnet.
- Magnet pair geometry. Pole-to-pole orientation determines how aggressively the pair attracts at distance. A slight offset on the lid magnet softens the snap.
- Magnet-to-board distance. The thickness of the paper or cloth between the magnet and the closing surface affects pull-force exponentially — every additional 0.1 mm reduces force by roughly 8%. Tight wrap construction means stronger magnets are not always required.
Rated Gauss stays at 2,800 across the cabinet. We do not buy magnets at higher field strengths because the soft-latch UX collapses above that — the lid snaps too aggressively and the buyer perceives the closure as cheap.
How to spec it on a brief
A buyer-friendly spec line on a magnetic-flap brief is shorter than most teams think:
"Magnetic closure pull-force in the 18–25 g range, soft-latch feel, hidden magnets under the wrap."
Three things are happening in that sentence. 18–25 g anchors a range, not a number — it tells the press operator we have target intent but expect to dial it during the sample round. Soft-latch feel rules out the high end. Hidden magnets under the wrap is the construction expectation: the buyer should not see, hear, or feel the magnet edges.
We will produce a sample within 7–10 days of brief approval, dial the pull-force live, and the brand sample-team confirms by hand. The number on the brief is a starting position; the number on the production crate is the one that survived the table test.
Failure modes
Two ways pull-force goes wrong in the wild:
Too weak (< 6 g). The closure pops open in transit. The buyer receives a box that has been opened in the freight carton, touched by the warehouse, and re-closed by an underpaid hand. Brand damage. We catch this in QC by hanging a 6 g mass from every fifty-piece sample lot.
Too strong (> 50 g). The closure snaps the lid open with a force that startles. The buyer perceives the box as industrial, not luxurious. Worse: repeated opening at high force can crack the wrap at the magnet's edge over a six-month shelf life. Caught at the same QC stage; we re-spec downward and re-sample.
There is also a third, subtler mode: uneven pull across the closure line. If two magnets on a wide lid are unevenly placed, the closure stays closed but with a torsional bias. The buyer feels the lid "fall" toward one corner. We test for this on production samples by laying the closed box on a flat surface and checking whether the lid sits parallel.
What this looks like on a real project
