The exterior of a luxury rigid box carries the brand identity. The interior is where the product sits. When a buyer opens a box and sets it down to examine the contents, the interior surface is what they see and touch for the longest uninterrupted moment. For jewelry and watch categories in particular, that surface is almost always velvet or flock. The two materials produce different aesthetics, require different production methods, and suit different applications. Specifying the wrong one produces a box that looks correct in the brief and wrong in the hand.
What is the difference between velvet and flock lining in a luxury box?
Velvet is a woven pile fabric glued to a tray or box interior; flock is a coating of electrostatically applied short fibres bonded directly to a substrate. Velvet produces a deeper, more structured pile and is the standard choice for jewelry and watch presentation. Flock produces a finer, more uniform surface and is common in fragrance and cosmetic applications where colour accuracy and fine-grain texture are priorities.
Velvet is a woven textile with a cut pile — the loops of the weave are cut at the top to produce a soft, standing-fibre surface. In box production, velvet is supplied as a fabric roll and applied to a pre-formed tray or directly to the box interior walls by wrapping and gluing. The pile depth runs 1.5–3.0 mm for standard box velvet, which is deep enough to create a visible lustre at oblique angles and a noticeable softness in the hand.
Flock is applied by electrostatic coating: short fibres (typically 0.5–2.0 mm) are charged and drawn perpendicular to an adhesive-coated substrate. The result is a dense, upright fibre surface that has a fine-grain appearance and a matte sheen. Flock can be applied to thermoformed trays, paper-covered board panels, or directly to moulded foam inserts. The pile is shorter and more uniform than velvet, which reads as more refined at close range but less sumptuous in photographs.
When should you specify velvet, flock, or microfibre?
Velvet is the standard interior for jewelry and watch boxes; flock is the correct choice when precise Pantone colour or complex 3D tray geometry is required; microfibre suits large cavities where soft appearance at lower material cost is the priority.

Velvet is the correct choice for jewelry and watch boxes where the tactile signal at opening is a primary consideration. The deep pile cushions the product against the insert surface, provides a visual background that makes metal and stone colours read clearly, and photographs well in a flat-lay product image. Standard velvet colours for the jewelry category are black, ivory, and navy — these are stock, which reduces minimum run size. Custom velvet colours are possible but require a higher minimum and a longer lead time for fabric production.
Flock is the correct choice when colour accuracy is the priority, or when the interior surface must cover a complex 3D tray geometry that a fabric cannot wrap cleanly. Flock can be applied in precise Pantone-referenced shades with consistent coverage across thermoformed tray contours. For a fragrance house that wants the box interior to match a specific packaging colour exactly, flock delivers more predictable results than woven velvet because it is a coating rather than a fabric. Microfibre applies where the cavity is large, cost is a priority, and tactile softness is secondary to visual appearance. Microfibre has a flat-nap surface similar to suede, with good colour consistency and lower per-unit material cost than velvet. It is commonly used in tech accessory and mid-range gifting boxes where the interior needs a premium visual without the cost of deep-pile velvet.
How is velvet applied to a rigid box insert or tray?
Two methods are used in rigid box production, and the choice affects both the visual result and the per-unit cost.
Fabric-wrapped tray. A separate tray — greyboard or foam base — is covered in velvet fabric by hand-wrapping, with the fabric folded and glued at the tray edges. This method produces a clean, tight corner at the tray edge and a full-pile surface on all visible faces. It is the premium method and is standard for jewelry and watch boxes where edge quality matters. The wrap is hand-assembled, which is the primary cost driver.
Pre-flocked or pre-velvet thermoformed insert. A thermoformed plastic tray is produced to the required cavity shape, then flocked or velvet-coated as a post-forming step. The thermoformed tray allows complex, contoured cavities (ring channels, watch-crown recesses, multi-piece jewelry sets) that a greyboard-wrapped tray cannot reproduce. The coating is applied after forming, so coverage at deep contour points is slightly less even than on a flat face — this is an engineering tolerance, not a defect.

How is velvet colour matched for a custom brief?
Woven velvet colour matching is approximate rather than exact in the Pantone system. Unlike paper or flock, woven pile fabric reflects light from multiple fibre angles simultaneously, which means a Pantone swatch approved on a flat paper sample will not match identically when produced in velvet. The mismatch is most visible on saturated or warm-tone colours; black, ivory, and deep navy diverge less because the eye is less sensitive to hue shift in dark and neutral ranges.
For custom velvet colours, the brief should include a physical colour reference and allow for a fabric-to-reference approval before production commitment. How does velvet lining interact with the exterior foil and emboss?
The interior and exterior of a rigid box are finished as separate assemblies. Velvet on the interior has no effect on the foil, emboss, or laminate options on the exterior wrap paper.
The sequencing in production is: the exterior wrap paper is printed and finished first (offset printing, hot-foil at ±0.1 mm registration, laminate, spot-UV), then applied to the greyboard shell. The interior tray or lining is assembled and inserted as a separate step. The two operations are independent; there is no constraint between interior lining material and exterior decoration method.
Where a constraint does exist is in weight and interior clearance. A 2.5 mm greyboard shell with a fabric-wrapped tray adds measurable weight to the finished assembly.
